Documentary

It is quite astonishing to see how just one little seed is capable of transforming itself into a tree to produce fruit as well as to see how one single person can transform himself and the world that surrounds him. The doctor in the documentary is a live example that with dedication, perseverance and conviction goals can be accomplished. At times we limit ourselves to just doing the things we see more convenient to us, tasks where we are not required to struggle as much and we don’t step away from that. He on the other hand went that extra step in order to bring about a change in a marginalized society where poverty and unequal treatment towards women predominate. He had to adapt to an unknown culture and to the standards of living of these Middle Eastern communities within other things, all of this though for a prosperous future. He stated that for a better future education is a must, and I have to agree with his belief. We don’t necessarily have to go as far as Pakistan to see this, in Juarez and even here in El Paso, lack of education in high school and/or college are leading many teenagers to a lifestyle of drug dealing, causing the entire city to regress as a whole. Education, also allows people to have a basic understanding of various things, especially mathematics, politics and health in my belief; understanding that with proper sanitation the risk of ingesting life threatening nematodes/flatworms is greater reduced. If these marginalized people are educated on how the political system runs in their country they can defend themselves and fight for justice and equality. I witness this concept constantly with native people in Mexico, according to the law they are protected and should be granted benefits but since they are uneducated and unaware of this they go on about living without them. At last women, little by little are gaining their rights. It is quite sad to see in National Geographic magazines articles that mention and show pictures of women being beaten and abused because of culture and religion beliefs. But now small girls are put into schools so that as they grow older they will be able to be more independent; so that her children could also be brought up to be healthier. Aside from helping both the poor and the women to get a better education for their own good the economy will be boosted undoubtedly. More people will enter the workforce thus more production and exports will be available for the country’s economy. A single man with good projects to help a certain group of people has brought and will bring about a great amount of change, in a personal and at a larger scale. A single intention can bring about a whole lot of change.

  1. Ivan I agree with you that a person who takes one small simple step can make a huge difference in a community, in a country or in the world. And definitely Greg Mortenson made an impact to this people, and there should be more people who are willing to do the same thing as he did.

  2. Very well written entry. I enjoyed how eloquently you wrote this. I also appreciate the fact that you have put in some personal experience to help show that you don't have to look halfway across the globe to see that change is necessary.
